Today's healthcare is often lacking in such things, the bottom line has NO Real Place in today's or any Patient Care... The reality is yes costs and the economy are crazy, but focusing on NO Wait ER's only encourages foolishness coming into the ER..NOT patient responsibility in healthcare decisions or just teaching common sense to people who want to use this area as their doctor's office or clinic. It is called an Emergency Room for a reason..
SO many of these situations could be handled differently, providing other possibilities and yes clinics for these non-emergent complaints: i.e. the dental complaints, med refills, simple lacerations and exams. AND A FULL-TIME (OPEN) Pain management office, I understand that chronic pain is serious, but it is also an issue that needs focus on treating causes instead of just continually narcotizing patients and creating drug dependency.
Education on the right to dignity with end-of-life conditions is another topic but a huge issue within too many communities that do not understand how much pain keeping people alive in the face of futility causes.
SO much patient/community education needs to be done!!! AND to expect patient respect, understanding, and culpability. The hospital is not The Marriot or McDonalds (You are expected to pay at the first window)...Their are healthcare costs and so many people come in expecting drive through medicine in the ER while they have their designer phones, clothes and purses, with no intention of even forking over a dollar...and they sometimes do not understand when true emergencies need to be tended to...
AGAIN EDUCATE THE patients, public and communities. FACTS of LIFE should not just be an old TV show...
Best and most realistic example of ER abuse and a huge percentage of the patient population.
The right to safe workplace practice is EVERY nurses right, and with knowledge and experience, autonomy is earned and deserved. Loyalty should be rewarded....
